Letter from the 2010 SHP President:

Wade Pickren

Welcome to the website of the Society for the History of Psychology (SHP; APA Division 26). We are an international organization of scholars, teachers, and members whose interests and scholarship are concerned with understanding the historical events and important people who have shaped the development of psychological thought and practice.

  • Check out our journal, History of Psychology [See Side Bar for TOC], and visit us on Facebook.

  • Plan to join us March 5-6 in Brooklyn, NY for our program with the Eastern Psychological Association. Highlights include:
    • Suzanne Ouellette's talk on the work of the late Robert White
    • A symposium on teaching the history of psychology led by Barney Beins
    • SHP President Wade Pickren's talk on Otto Klineberg's cross-disciplinary work in psychology and anthropology

  • SHP has an excellent program planned for August 12-15 in San Diego as part of the annual convention of the APA. Please make plans now to join us. We will have invited talks by:
    • Leila Zenderland
    • Ann Taves
    • Stephanie Shields
    • Christopher Green
    • Peter Hegarty ( Leading a highly anticipated symposium on the history of sexuality)

Special Invitation to Share your Research

Many of our members publish in both historical and psychological journals, with the result that excellent work is often overlooked. In order to help spread knowledge of our members' work, we are creating a database of recent research accessible on our website. If you would like to have your research listed, please send us titles, dates, and place of publication. Send to
President@historyofpsych.org or news.editor@historyofpsych.org

  • Events (Meetings, Conferences, Workshops, calls for submissions...months or years ahead of time)
  • Member News  (congratulations, awards, honors, publications, notice of members passing, etc.)
  • Historical resources (new websites, books, favorite history of Psych PowerPoints & resources, etc.) with a special emphasis on those that are useful for teaching the history of psychology.
  • Employment opportunities
  • Information on favorite history of psychology archives and collections
